Yesterday I finished painting a fairly large piece (36"x48") which I called Flower Sisters. Most of the time I have one main idea when I begin a painting and everything else appears around it only because "it feels right to me". I think an artist should leave room for the art to become what it wants to, I know it sounds a little crazy but it works! This is just what happened here. Here is how these little sisters emerged and transformed on my canvas.
(if the images seem cut on the right side, you can click on each to see it in full)
And here is the final painting (including the creepy detail of a black squid at the girl's feet!)...
...and a close up of the sister's faces.
love this!!!!

Thank you all for your comments.
Alicia, I paint in acrylic, it's my favorite medium, it allows me to do almost anything I want, in particular good skin color by layering bright colors under the skin tone :)
